Open Call for Concept Papers
The PAINT Program is commissioning two projects during the 2011-2012 fiscal year, thanks to a grant from Louisville Metro. Projects will take place in the Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood and the Breckenridge Estates Neighborhood.
Lucky Horseshoe Neighborhood
This unique urban neighborhood entirely encompasses Churchill Downs. It features a large multicultural population that includes Hispanics, African-Americans, and Caucasians. The blend of residential and commercial, combined with the presence of Kentucky's horseracing mecca merge to form a communtiy with a distinct sense of place and identity unlike no other. Residential housing is predominantly rental, with a large portion subsidized through the Section 8 voucher program. The racetrack draws a wide range of people from different economic and racial backgrounds, and thousands of visitors from all over the globe to the neighborhood. Immediate needs and problems abound, including preservation issues, problems facing English language learners, parking, litter, and crime.
Information Session
To prepare artists for the conceptual development of their project proposals, Center For Neighborhoods will be hosting a facilitated conversation with residents and stakeholders of the Lucky Horseshoe neighborhood. Come out to listen and learn about this community, make connections, and capture essential information to inspire a winning project proposal.
